Creating Sustainable Creative Communities in San Diego

Permanent Affordable Live/Work Space for Artists & Arts Organization

The public and private sectors in progressive cities are now working diligently to attract and retain artists and arts districts because these become magnets, centers of creativity attracting the “Creative Classes” of all occupations. Furthermore, artists in communities help to preserve local culture and character, create local jobs, provide arts education, stimulate community pride and business vitality. In essence, if clustered together, they create economic development (Ray Street, Balboa Park, etc.) Given these physical, cultural and socio-economic benefits, the establishment of permanent, affordable artist live/work spaces should be a high priority for our City. Synergy Art Foundation received a grant from LISC (Local Initiative Support Corporation), a national organization with a community focus, to retain ArtSpace, a national developer that specializes in working with communities to address the need for permanent, affordable live/work space for artists. The grant was complemented by a smaller grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

Since then, Synergy has developed an artist's and arts organization survey to evaluate local needs. To take the survey.....
